When three paintings are stolen from a Munich gallery where the U.S. president soon will be visiting, authorities are baffled. Was the intention of the thieves to protest the visit? Or was it to embarrass the gallery’s director, who is running for public office? Or was it simply to sell the paintings on the black market? The gallery has works of greater value, so the selection of those particular paintings is a mystery. Three days later, a man offers to sell information about the paintings, but only to Adam Welch, a visiting professor of Art. Welch is curious and agrees to talk with the informant to clear up the mystery. But the meeting clears up nothing, and instead turns out to be the first brushstroke of a composition that becomes increasingly impressionistic as events unfold.
