Seeing Pittsburgh interprets Pittsburgh not as a mere collection of buildings, but as the result of human will, imagination, idealism, and, at times, foolishness. It will enchant visitors, take natives to places they've never been, and offer a fresh perspective on a great American city.
Pittsburgh invites walking far more than most American citites, and Fifield has organized the downtown itineraries into walking tours. For the others, you will need a car--at least for long stretches--but sections of each tour can be walked. The driving portion of the itineraries is easier to follow if the drive has a navigator or has plotted the route ahead of time. Neighborhood maps are included here, but a current city street map is an essential tool. Most of the tours can be completed in one morning or afternoon outing.
