Penthouse of the Gods - A Pilgrimage into the Heart of Tibet and the Sacred City of Lhasa
This antiquarian book contains Theos Bernard’s 1939 travel book, “Penthouse of the Godsâ€. Within it, Bernard recounts his unprecedented 1937 stay in ‘the forbidden holy city’ of Lhasa, Tibet. A student of Buddhism and Tantra, he spoke Tibetan, wore Tibetan attire, boarded with a Tibetan nobleman for three months, visited the great monasteries and temples, and met important dignitaries, ambassadors, and officials. This fantastic account is unparalleled in its detail and authenticity, and offers a glimpse into a place and time completely unrecognisable from the Tibet of today. Theos Casimir Bernard (1908 - 1947) was an author and explorer, most famous for his work in the fields of yoga and religious studies; especially Tibetan Buddhism. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
